Estamos en otoño y con el cambio de estación, nos despedimos un año más del calor, de las vacaciones y de la sensación de no tener nada que hacer. Otoño nos permite disfrutar de los pequeños  detalles, nos invita a ponernos una capa más de ropa y a comenzar la rutina que dejamos meses atrás.

El otoño trata de comienzos y ¿qué mejor forma que hacerlo aprendiendo inglés? Por ello, hemos preparado una selección de vocabulario y expresiones, que no echarás de menos en los cursos de inglés de Merit y que están asociadas con el otoño, descubre otra forma de ver el otoño en inglés a continuación:

  • TURN OVER A NEW LEAF.

Meaning: Begin again, changing one’s behaviour in a good way.

Example: “He has learned his lesson and has turned over a new leaf“.

  • TAKE A LEAF OUT OF SOMEONE’S BOOK.

Meaning: Follow someone’s example.

Example: “He’s really changed his life around. You should take a leaf out of his book”.

  • DRIVE SOMEONE NUTS.

Meaning: To make someone go crazy.

Example: “That noise is driving me nuts. Can you stop it please!”

  • BE NUTS ABOUT SOMEONE OR SOMETHING.

Meaning: Be obsessed with someone or something.

Example: “I’m nuts about you”

  • BE THE APPLE OF SOMEONE’S EYE.

Meaning: Someone who is cherished above everyone.

Example: “Even though Jake has three children, Sally has always been the apple of his eye”.

  • TO SQUIRREL SOMETHING AWAY.

Meaning: Hide or store something like a squirrel.

Example: “He squirrelled money away for years and now he can enjoy his retirement”.

  • THAT OLD CHESTNUT.

Meaning: A story or a joke that has been told so many times that it becomes uninteresting.

Example:

Julie: “The best years of your life are when you’re young”.

Tom: “Oh not that old chestnut again!”

  • LOST IN THE MISTS OF TIME.

Meaning: Something has been forgotten because it happened a long time ago.

Example: “The village traditions have been lost in the mists of time“.

  • GOLDEN YEARS.

Meaning: The years of retirement, normally after age 65.

Example: “He’s still really active in these golden years.”

  • THE AUTUMN YEARS.

Meaning: The later years of someone’s life.

Example: “It was only when she reached her autumn years that she found out what life was all about.”
