“You do live here, don’t you?” “Yes, I do.”

“She was laughing, wasn’t she?” “Yes, she was.”

“He looks after his mother, doesn’t he?” “Yes, she’s not been well recently.”

“You’re Flemish, aren’t you?” “That’s right. I was born in Belgium.”

“You should have studied more, shouldn’t* you?” “You’re right. I failed miserably!”

Si no hi ha un verb auxiliar ni modal a l’oració principal, utilitzem do, does, did a la question tag:

“He sings beautifully, doesn’t he?” “Yes, he’s got a great voice.”

“She doesn’t have much to do, does she?” “No. She sits around all day doing nothing.”

“The kids wanted to play video games last night, didn’t they?” “Yes, they stayed up till late.”

Un dels errors més comuns és amb have, have to & have got. Recorda que quan have got és el verb principal, el question tag es forma afegint have/haven’t o has/hasn’t.

She has a fast car, doesn’t she

He has got a house in the country, hasn’t he?

They have to go early, don’t they?

They have got to eat, haven’t they?

We’ve been here before, haven’t we? fairly sure

We’ve been here before, haven’t we? not so sure

So, you’re interested in question tags, are you?

You’re getting married next week, are you?

You just won the match, did you?

EXCEPCIONS I INFORMACIÓ EXTRA

➡️Si el verb de l’oració principal és I am, el question tag negatiu és aren’t I.

“Sorry, I’m wrong again, aren’t I?” “Yes. You should know your times table by now.”

➡️Si el verb de l’oració principal és used to, el question tag és did.

“You used to go to Longendale school, didn’t you?” “That’s right. Long time no see!”

➡️Quan fem un suggeriment, és comú utilitzar l’expressió Let’s (Let’s go to the swimming pool this afternoon”). Sempre utilitzem shall we al question tag, sigui positiu com negatiu.

Let’s go to the swimming pool, shall we?

Let’s not go to the swimming pool, shall we?

➡️Utilitzem there en comptes del pronom quan utilitzem there is i there are.

There isn’t any water left in the bottle, is there?

There is plenty of money in the bank, isn’t there?

➡️Si el verb de l’oració principal és ought to, solem utilitzar should com a question tag.

We ought to go tomorrow, shouldn’t we

We ought to go tomorrow, oughtn’t we?

They never do their homework, do they?

No one uses an alarm clock anymore, do they?

Everyone loved the party, didn’t they?

Amb altres noms indefinits com something, anything, nothing, everything, utilitzem it.

Everything went well, didn’t it?

Nothing really matters in the end, does it?

➡️Amb imperatius, solem utilitzar won’t you.

Sit down, won’t you?

També podem utilitzar altres verbs modals com will, would, can i could.

Close the door, will you?

És important recordar, que depenent del to de veu can’t you pot ser bastant impacient i molest.

Switch the TV off, can’t you?

They loved Bali, right?  They loved Bali, no?
