  • blood, sweat and tears

Meaning: A project or action that requires a lot of effort and hard work.
Example: The company’s success wasn’t just down to luck; it was blood, sweat and tears all the way.

  • burn the candle at both ends

Meaning: stay up late into the night and getting up early to start on the work in the morning.

Example: I’m burning the candle at both end ends trying to get my start-up working.

  • buckle down

Meaning: focus and put a lot of energy into a project or a task.

Example: Ok, it’s time for me to buckle down and get this presentation under wraps.

  • explore all avenues

Meaning: try out every possibility in order to obtain a result or find a solution.

Example: We can’t say it’s impossible until we’ve explored all avenues.

  • go the extra mile

Meaning: do more than is expected of you.

Example: He’s definitely up for promotion. He’s always willing to go the extra mile.

  • have on the brain

Meaning: think or talk about it all constantly.
Example: He never stops thinking about work. He’s got it on the brain all the time!

  • keep your nose to the grindstone

Meaning: to work hard and constantly.
Example: When we were presenting the yearly accounts, it was all nose to the grindstone.

  • pull your own weight

Meaning: do your fair share of the work.

Example: I don’t think that everyone on the team is pulling their weight. Only a couple of staff are actually doing any real work.

  • put some elbow grease (into it)

Meaning: put a little more effort into the task at hand.

Example: You’ll have to put more elbow grease into getting that finished, I’m afraid.

  • work your butt off / work like a trojan / break your back

Meaning: to work extremely hard.

Example: She really broke her back to get the results in on time.
