A l’article d’avui parlarem de la diferència entre as i like. Són unes de les paraules més fàcils de confondre en anglès ja que ambdues es poden utilitzar per a parlar de similituds o per a fer comparacions. A continuació, desgranarem, punt a punt, els diferents significats per a que així puguis tenir ben clara la diferència entre as i like. Sobretot, tingues en compte, que aquí no parlarem de like com a verb.
Quan utilitzem LIKE
????Com a conjunció – “for example”
Like es pot utilitzar per donar exemples. Significa el mateix que “for example” i sol anar seguit d’un nom o pronom.
I love all dogs, like labradors, terriers, border collies…
A una conversa informal utilitzem “like what?” per preguntar per un exemple.
Martha: “I did so many crazy things today!”
Anne: “Crazy things? Like what?”
????Com a conjunció – “the same as”
Like també es pot utilitzar com una conjunció amb el significat de “the same as”.
John loves sushi, like me.
Hong Kong is a busy and exciting city, like London.
I wish I could have a bike like yours
????Com a preposició
Like quan s’utilitza com a preposició significa “similar to”, fent referència a les mateixes característiques, qualitats o trets. En el cas de fer una comparació, like és seguit per una frase nominal. En el cas de parlar de coses semblants, solem utilitzar like amb els verbs dels sentits (look, feel, taste, smell y sound).
She looks like her mother.
That sounds like a car.
The room smelt like fragrant orange blossom.
Quan utilitzem like en el sentit de “similar to” podem afegir paraules com bit, just, very, so i more abans de like per parlar del grau de similitud.
Going in a wind tunnel is very like flying in the air.
Isn’t she just like woman we just saw?
That smells a bit like raw onion.
The phone cover was more like a pink than a gold colour.
❗VIGILA
També podem utilitzar as if o as though (signifiquen el mateix) en el sentit de “similar to”. La diferència està en que like és seguit per un nom o frase nominal i en canvi as if / as though són seguides per una oració.
You look as if you haven’t slept for a week! (clause: Subject + Verb)
You look as though you had seen a ghost! (clause: Subject + Verb)
Quan el verb a l’oració està en passat, la comparació és irreal o improbable. A l’últim exemple que us hem posat, queda clar que la persona no ha vist un fantasma, així que és una comparació. En canvi, en el primer exemple (amb un verb en present) hi ha una gran probabilitat que la persona no hagi dormit en un període de temps llarg.
????Com a sufix
Podem utilitzar like com a sufix en noms donat-li un significat de “similar to”.
That’s a really lifelike portrait of him.
He has a childlike trust in strangers.
????Per omplir silencis
A conversas informals solem utilitzar like per omplir silencis quan necessitem temps per a pensar que volem dir o per reformular el que acabem de dir.
I need to … like … Well, it’s … like … I need a bit more time to think on this one.
????Per enfocar l’atenció
Podem utilitzar like per cridar l’atenció sobre el que direm a continuació. Fem això, sobretot, quan parlem de quantitats i temps.
It wasn’t until like midnight that we finally sat down to eat (like brings focus to how late it was).
Quan utilitzem AS
????As per a dir “in the same way”
Podem utilitzar as per a fer comparacions, però as ha d’estar seguit per:
- Una oració (subjecte+verb)
She makes chocolate brownies as her mother used to make them.
- Una frase preposicional
In Barcelona, as in Southampton, there is too much air pollution due to port activity.
A vegades invertim el subjecte i el verb per a un estil més formal.
She loves cocktails, as I do (or ‘as do I’, even more formally).
❗ATENCIÓ
No obstant això, en anglès col·loquial sol utilitzar-se LIKE en comptes d’AS. Encara que el seu ús no és correcte, sembla ser que aquesta tendència s’està fent cada vegada més popular i podria convertir-se en una nova regla en el futur.
Nobody loves him as I do.
Nobody loves him like I do.
????Per a fer una comparació
Utilitzem (not) as + adjetiu/adverbi + as per fer comparacions quan les coses que comparem són iguals d’alguna manera.
I am not as tall as José.
A tiger is not as fast as a cheetah.
També hem d’utilitzar as a expressions com “as much as”. Aquestes expressions poden anar seguides per un subjecte i un verb o un nom o preposició.
Susie loves dogs as much as I do.
Sam works as much as me.
As també ha d’utilitzar-se després de les expressions “the same” i “such”
You’ve got the same mark as me in that exam!
There are so many things we can do to save water, such as collecting rain water, turning the tap off when we are cleaning our teeth, etc.
????Per a referir-se a les funcions, feina o qualitats d’un individu
As pot utilitzar-se juntament amb un nom per parlar de la posició laboral d’algú. Això és especialment comú amb la feina.
It is your responsibility as an accountant, to keep the books up to date.
As a teacher, I love to motivate my students and see them learn.
❗VIGILA
No pots utilitzar like per parlar de la feina d’algú. Has d’utilizar as:
She works as a director.
She works as the director (= she is the director).
She works like a director.
She works like the director (= she isn’t the director, but we are comparing her to the way a director works).
Utilitzem as per parlar de la feina o funcions d’una persona i like per fer una comparació.
????As significant “in the role of”
Quan utilitzem as + nom, significa “in the role of”.
He used his spoon as a knife.
A wrap is essential when you travel. You can use it as a towel or a skirt.
Utilitzem as com a preposició, conjunció o adverbi per indicar un personatge o rol:
As your father, I’m telling you to stay in tonight. (I am your father and I am telling you this in my role as your father.)
❗VIGILA
Si like va seguit d’un nom, reflexa un significat similar que amb as.
Like your father, I’m telling you to stay in tonight. (I’m not your father, but I am am acting in a similar way to your father.)
????Per a dir “in the same manner”
A més, as també pot utilitzar-se com a conjunció en el context de “in the same way that”.
You must put up the shelves as instructed in the manual.
It all went ahead just as I planned.
????Per a parlar de dues coses simultànies
Utilitzem as com “while” o “at the same time”.
As I was walking down the street, I slipped on a banana skin.
As I grew up, I realised that my father was not who I thought he was.
????Per a donar raons
As també pot significar “because”.
As I was late, I didn’t realise there was breakfast laid out on the table.
As it was raining, we stayed at home.
