Avui veurem els verbs get, have, lethelp.

Causative verbs 1 – Have / get something done

Construcció: subjecte + get/have + persona + past participle

have / get something done
She had / got his nails cut.
She didn’t have / get her eyes checked.
I had / got the roof repaired.
Did you have / get your mobile fixed?

Significa que algú ha fet alguna cosa per tu perquè li has pagat o li has demanat que ho faci, però no dius qui ha estat.

Quina és la diferència entre la veu passiva i have/get something done?

  • The house was cleaned. (passive)
  • I got the house cleaned. (causative)

  • They got the company’s accounts audited last week.
  • They got the company assessed for risk.

  • I got the assignment finished last night.
  • We finally got our tax return done yesterday.
  • I got the windows repaired before the storm.

Have done = Get done

Have done i get done tenen el mateix significat quan es fa referència a serveis pagats en el passat.

  • I had my hair done. = I got my hair done
  • She had her windows cleaned. = She got her windows cleaned.

Causative verbs 2 – Get someone TO DO something / have someone DO something

have / get someone to do / do something
I’ll have my assistant call you with the arrangements.
I had the gardener weed the terrace.
He got me to do the interview.
They got him to sign the letter.

  • They had John take the notes at the meeting.
  • She had her secretary cancel the meeting.
  • I had Peter pick up Sharon up from the airport.

Causative verbs 3 – Let someone/something do something

Significa que permets a algú a que faci alguna cosa o que succeeixi alguna cosa.

let someone/something do something
She let the children stay up until ten.
Why did you let the vegetables overboil?
This is the last time I let you tell me what to do!
Let me come too!

Causative verbs 4 – Help someone to do something

help someone (to) do something
Could you help me with my homework?
I don’t see how this helps me understand causative verbs!
